The group had existed for eleven years, under different names and settings, before making this first live album. Recorded 1966 at the Roostertail Club in Detroit where they performed in front of an obviously excited female audience. And all that experience shows - it's tight and very confident. The audio is good for its time. Today most live recordings are balanced, overdubbed and modulated. Here you get the impression of a few mikes in front of the stage and then right on. Nothing is softened or remade - it has a true live feeling with lots of the club atmosphere sipping through. I don't need any other "embettered" versions. With this mono I'm at the Roostertail Club 1966 listening to The Temptations and that's good enough for me. Premiere US release on Gordy (GLP/GLPS 921).
