QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE/HAPPY TRAILS E-T 120 (-69) UK MONO

As I understand this mono is almost unknown, even to die-hard collectors of the group, so I'm doing a re-post with a few more details. Not much I can add about the Fillmore East/West recordings or the classic San Fransisco sound acid/pych rock performance. It's as good as it gets - laid-back and tight at the same time, reflecting the time it was made. The mono sounds surprisingly fine. With sixties live recordings you never know if it was first recorded for mono and transfered to some kind of stereo afterwards, or if it was stereo to begin with and mono was either an aftermix or a fold-down. I can only guess this is a fold-down, but a very good one. Live stereos from this period tends to be somewhat unnatural, as if the mix don't exactly capture the act as it was heard by the audience. Here you get the sound as one piece, still having some kind of original atmosphere and natural separation. The balance is perfect throughout with Cipollina's guitar more in focus. The stereo has advantages, but this rocks more on high volume. First press on black/silver label with "Sold in UK..." and laminated flip/back cover. (YMÖ*)(LYBÖ*)
