ALBION COUNTRY BAND/BATTLE OF THE FIELD HELP 25 (-76) UK

Ashley Hutchings is without doubt one of the most influential figures of the UK folk rock scene. From mid sixties till today he has worked as bassist, singer, producer, arranger and band leader through a number of constellations. As co-founder of Fairport Convention and founder of Steeleye Span he participated in the groups early albums, but unhappy with the moves away from traditional English folk music towards pop and rock he left and started Albion Band wich he has stayed with to this day. First time the group name showed up was as backing band to Hutching's wife Shirley Collins' 1971 "No Roses" album, but then as a collective name for the twentyfive guest musicians. After further collaborations with some of the involved he formed Albion Country Band 1973. First two settings didn't stick although the second, containing members from both Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, lasted long enough to make this recording. Since they split directly after it wasn't released but stayed in the vaults to 1976 and this issue. The sales were healthy and from 1977 the group have released over fifty albums with different names and settings. This is English folk music all through. The tracks have traditional roots with the band adding sightly more modern atmosphere. A few of the songs are close to folk rock, but never interfering with the origins. Audio is stunning - natural and clear with perfect separation. It's a fine LP and, as a lover of both Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention, one I couldn't do without. First US issue 1976 on Antilles (AN 7027), second 1985 on Carthage (CGLP 4420). Premiere UK release on Islands budget HELP label with thin matt cover and black inner. (BRYF*)(FÄV*) (HÄLX*)
