JOHN MAYALL/THRU THE YEARS SKL 5086 (-71) UK
A kind of follow-up to the 1969 "Looking Back" compilation. There's fourteen very good songs here, showing his ability to interpret and develop black music and confirming his position as one of the founders of the "White Blues" genre. He also had a talent for inspiring and sometimes molding the musicians he played with. I wonder if any other UK artist has worked with so many gigants. The tracks on here have some great names - Peter Green, Aynsley Dunbar, Keef Heartly, Mick Taylor, John Hiseman and Dick Heckstall-Smith to mention a few. Most are rare '45 cuts and some previously unissued. "Crawling Up A Hill" is re-channeled, the rest true stereo with very fine audio. This was UK only, but the US 2-LP issue (London 2PS 600/1) was partly the same. Record number one has the same matrix no. as UK (ZAL 10478/79), but with a different track order. First three cuts from this - "Crocodile Walk", "My Baby Is Sweeter" and "Crawling Up A Hill" - was omitted and the thirteenth cut "Knockers Step Forward" moved as opening track on side one. The second record of the US issue has matrix no. SAHS 1602/03 and consists mainly of previous album tracks . Early UK with label as shown here and laminated Clout&Baker cover. (MÄH*)(FXÄC*)
