FAIRPORT CONVENTION/RISING FOR THE MOON ILPS 9313 (-75) UK

Perhaps it's too much calling this a forgotten gem, but it's certainly not getting the appreciation or hype it deserves among collectors and music lovers. It was the result of a merging between what was left of the old group (Pegg, Mattacks, Swarbick) and the core of Fotheringay (Sandy Denny, Trevor Lucas and American Jerry Donahue), and planned as a big comeback. All numbers self-penned, seven by Denny alone or as co-writer. She sings lead on most of the tracks and her vocals are as lovely as ever. The production this time was handeled by Glyn Jones - producer and engineer who worked with Beatles, Stones, Who, Dylan, Zeppelin, Clapton and about everybody else. Result is slightly more popish than before but without losing the folky touch. Two of the tracks reminds of US country in style and some are according to the English folk tradition, but IMO Denny's numbers and her singing is what makes the album. At this state her voice was more mature, maybe tainted by years of drug abuse, but still beautiful to my ears. Her compositions are same class as anything on her solo albums or other group efforts with the same magic. The album had mediocre sales and just got one week on the UK list at #52, reaching #152 at Billboard. Denny left the band later same year, together with Lucas and Donahue, and recorded one more solo album before her death 1978. Forgotten or not - this album is a gem, still possible to get at a fair price...and it comes highly recommended. US release on Island with same number. Premiere UK with label as shown here, matt cover and black lyric/picture inner sleeve. (BRYF*)(FÄV*) (FÄHZ*)
