FAIRPORT CONVENTION/ANGEL DELIGHT ILPS 9162 (-71) UK

Prior to the 1970 album "Full House" Sandy Denny had quit the group and before recording this Richard Thompson left for a solo carreer. The only remaining member of the original group was Simon Nicol, now formimg a quartet with the three Dave's - Swarbick, Pegg and Mattacks. This was their first album not to be produced by Joe Boyd, instead the production was superwised by Boyds earlier team mate John Wood (who also worked with Sandy Denny, Nico, Pink Floyd and Nick Drake among others). Musically it's about the same procedure as before, but the overall impact is perkier and the sound sharper. The emphasis seems more on up-tempo and positive feelings, even though the lyrics sometimes are less happy. Maybe this has to do with John Wood taking over the rudder. In the studio-duos earlier teamwork Boyd was known to handle the musical direction while Wood concentrated on the sound. I like the album a lot. In comparison to earlier ones it may seem more lightweight, but still well played and positive with good audio. Favorite tracks - "Angel Delight" and "Sickness & Diseases". It was their most successful album in UK, peaking at #8. US issue on A&M (SP-4319). There's also been a few CD-reissues, some with bonus track. Premiere UK release with label as shown here and structured f/o cover with glued-on images. (BRYF*) (FÄHZ*)
