STEFAN GROSSMAN/RAGTIME COWBOY JEW TRA 223 (-70) UK

Never a list topper or a household name, but always respected for his guitar skill, musical multi talent and achievements. Early involved in the US folk revival, learned from the best black blues artists and became an expert in fingerstyle blues playing. Formed Even Dozen Jug Band 1964 with John Sebastian and Steve Katz, was breifly involved in a group including Janis Joplin and Taj Mahal two years later, and co-worked with The Fugs for a short period. He also released one of the first guitar instructional LP:s and a book serie on how to play the blues guitar. Moved to Europe 1967 where he continued touring, producing and educating and had a big influence on acoustic guitar play on the continent. This 2-LP set has a mix of blues, country and folk. All perfectly performed with electric or acoustic backing, handeled by long time UK folk music producer Bill Leader. Recorded in London, partly with guest musicians from Fotheringay - Pat Donaldson, Jerry Donaghue, Gerry Conway - and also Sandy Denny and Trevor Lucas singing background on one track. It's rather proper and well behaved and doesn't make me scream with excitement, yet cool and direct with top audio and a natural feeling. Don't know of any contemporary releases in other countries, but it was issued digitally re-mastered on CD 2011 (BGO 6120978). First UK had label as shown here and matt f/o cover with "recommended retail price" sticker and lyrics/credits inside fold out. (SYSÖ*) (FÄHZ*)
