MARVIN GAYE/TAMMI TERRELL - YOU'RE ALL I NEED TML 11084 (-68) UK MONO

This was the duos last real collaboration in the studio - recorded shortly after their first duet album "United" in 1966-67, just before Tarrell became ill diagnosted with a brain tumour. The -69 album "Easy" (see earlier post) was a fake, made by Gaye overdubbing his voice to two of Tarrell's earlier recordings and the rest of the female vocals done by Valerie Simpson. But this is the real thing and a lovely dance album. Most of the tracks are up-tempo with top vocals and a familiar Motown feeling - I just love that haunting bass drive and full melodic sound. It may be the same type of backing as with most of the labels other artists, but why mess with a winning formula. "It's Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "You're All I Need To Get By" were both US top 10 hits, while the album itself peaked at #60 at Billboard. First US stock issue as stereo only (Tamla TS-284), but a separate mono mix was done for white label promo copies (TM-284DJ). I don't know if this UK mono uses the US DJ mix or if it's something else, but the result is very satisfying - top quality audio with prominent base and perfect balance. First press with label as shown here and laminated flip/back cover. (TÖMÖ*)(FÄV*)(GÖJI*)
