JUICY LUCY/GET A WHIFF A THIS ILPS 9157 (-71) UK
Whenever I've seen this last LP by the original band handeled by critics or even fans it's always described as a downturn from their two previous. Apart from two mildly successful '45:s they were never close to big sales, but had a cult following during their short existence. Today first two albums are highly prized, but this never seems to catch up. I don't understand why. The backing is powerful and on the spot, Glen Campbell plays some very good slide guitar and Paul Williams is still one of the best white blues singers of the period. Side one is a killer - starting with a rough version of Randy Californias "Mr. Skin" and going on with self-penned "Midnight Sun" it's hard to imagine a better opening - and the rest has more than enough to nail you by the speakers. Side two is softer country style, maybe not as bouncy but Campbell and Williams makes it good. Maybe it'll never be regarded as high as the others by the public, but I like it a lot. Co-produced by the group and Nigel Thomas (who apart from handeling their two previous albums later would work with Budgie, Boxer, Saxon and Joe Cocker among others) and the audio is tops. First US on ATCO (SD 33-367). Premiere UK with label as shown here with ILPS no, "I" logo and thin structured E.J. Day cover. (PRÖZ*)
