FRIPP & ENO/NO PUSSYFOOTING HELP 16 (-73) UK
I got my first copy of this by mistake. Big fan of Roxy Music at the time and one day I heard "Baby's On Fire" on the radio, announced as from Eno's first solo LP. It sure got me on fire and I rushed down to the shop and grabbed the only Eno album I could find. At home I realised I got the wrong one, but the cover seal was already broken so no refund. First encounter was depressing - I'd expected something Roxy Music-like, but there was no songs and hardly any melodies, all I heard was sound loops and quirks. So it was put away for almost ten years till synth pop started to emerge with its more avant-gardistic art forms. Now zeitgeist has caught up and I appreciate it more - like a primitive fore-runner to pop synth art, but I'm also hearing melodies and even beauty in the two tracks. I wasn't alone in not getting it back then. The guys label Island Records was against, Fripp's band mates in King Crimson disliked and most of the music press either ignored or scolded it. It never came near the US charts and English release was on Island's budget HELP label at a large discount. The EG Records re-issues (vinyl -82, CD -87) got better sales and reception and seemingly it's slowly catching up with the public. First US 1976 on Antilles (AN-7001). 1973 issues in Italy (ILPS 19239) and Germany (87 511 ET) on pink rim labels. Premiere UK with label as shown here, matt fold/out cover and black inner.
