STEPPENWOLF RD-7974 (-68) UK MONO

I bet all checking this knows about their story. 1968-74 they ruled a lot on charts and stages with numbers of hits and mind blowing live performances. I saw them at Bath festival outside London -70. At the same festival was also Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Zappa/Mothers, Johnny Winter, Mayall and a lot more. Most of it was amazing and breath taking, but I remember the tightest and rawest of them all was Steppenwolf. We wanted to get closer to the stage, but apparently they were also the favorite group of the English Hells Angels and as soon as they got on stage a group of those plowed through the field to get to the front. So we watched from very far behind, but it was still very good. This is a classic LP and I always thought this copy had a true mono mix. But now I've heard both this and the US mono are fold downs (check comments below). It still provides a good listening though, so it's ok. US issue on Dunhill (D/DS 50029). Only very first UK release on RCA Victor. Later on Stateside in stereo only (SSL 5020) with silver cover as US.

  1. The US mono is referred to on the label, but no way this UK version is a plain fold down. There are no dramatic differences, but a few that can't be explained by reduction. Maybe the ground for the mix is a fold down, and then altered or tweaked just enough to make it sound good. I know that was rather common this period. But maybe it shouldn't be called a separate mix.
