HOLLIES SING DYLAN PMC 7078 (-69) UK MONO

After the recording of a psychedelic follow-up to "Butterfly" crashed Nash left the group. He was the only one into acid and wanted to experiment further, while the rest had a more conservative approach. With Nash gone the band lacked a creative force and newly written songs, so it's natural the next LP had a cover concept. It was to become their most hated album, both by fans and critics, but still managed #3 on the UK list. With that material they couldn't go wrong and I have to say it's very enjoyable listening. Never heard the original stereo, but this mono is lovely. Very soft and even with perfect balance. Hollies had been a mono group up till then and it wouldn't surprise me if this had a separate mix. First US as "Words And Music By Bob Dylan" (Epic BN 26447). Premiere UK had label as shown here and fully laminated cover. (HÖLY*) (PÖX*)

  1. MONOLOVER

I just googled "hollies sing dylan mono" and your site was first listed. Thanks for the image; in the US, of course, we did not get any mono/stereo variations after early 1968.

Do you have any idea as the the current market value of the UK pressing of PMC-7078?

One of the more impressive mono pressings I have had (and regret ever letting go) was BEGGAR'S BANQUET. Cleaner, clearer, more articulate than the stereo. Jagger's voice and Richards' and Jones' guitars especially stand out. I do miss that one.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks for Your comment! Always hard to guess market value of any record, it's all up to who's selling and who's buying. Hollies is not top rated at the moment, but this is rare so probably around $75-100 for a nice copy.

I totally agree about Stones BB, even though most of it is the same mix the mono comes through clearer and more dynamic. Probably they used less compression ot limitation on that.
