VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO VLP 9184 (-67) UK MONO

This album didn't sell much on release, too controversial for radio play and with subjects that didn't fit the 1967 summer of love zeitgeist - prostitution, drug addiction, Sado-Masochism and other "forbidden" sexual behavior. Today it's ranked one of the most influential albums in rock history. The story about the recording goes like this - a bunch of songs were recorded a put to an acetate. This was sent around to the big labels and rejected by Columbia, Electra and Atlantic before Verve and producer Tom Wilson accepted. Most of the songs were then re-recorded to the final result. Andy Warhole is credited for the production, but according to band members he didn't do anything but being there. The actual production was made by Tom Wilson and John Cale. While "White Light White Heat" gives a raw and "unfinished" impression (check my previous post on that), this is more a standard LP with real, well produced songs. The lyrics are unusual for its time as some of the artistery, but it's still in its outer shape a regular LP. A while ago I compared this mono with a US stereo. It's clear the mixes differ and also this mono sounds clearer and a lot louder. I've never heard a US mono, but if anyone reading this have, please tell me if that also have this high volume. (Michael P. tells me it has and also that the mono mix was done by Cale and Reed while Tom Wilson handeled the stereo. (Thank You for this valuable information Michael!)(NÖC*)(FÄV*)(YMÖ*)(ÄZC*).
