JOHN MAYALL/BLUES FROM LAUREL CANYON LK 4972 (-68) UK MONO

This is an autobiographical album about Mayalls first visit to Laurel Canyon, California before moving there for good. The lyrics are all about his stay and the people he met - Zappa with daughter Moon Unit, Canned Heat with "The Bear" and famous groupie Catherine James. Backing gruop consists of Collin Allen, Steve Thompson and Mick Taylor . Peter Green plays guitar on one track - "First Time Alone". The style is less jazz/bluesy than on Bare Wires and more towards the "pop" genre. The UK stereo on this is quite bad, sounds created and unnatural. Mono sounds a lot better, but somewhat more damp than "Bare Wires". From late -68 and on Decca UK made almost all their monos from the stereo tapes. Always seen this as a fold down, but if so the stereo mix must have been amended in some way to make it fit. Issued in US as stereo only (LONDON PS545) and reached #59 on Billboard 200. (MÄH*)
